World's largest skill-oriented competition for young people came to an end last Sunday in London. TeamFinland, the national team, celebrated at the end with 5 silver and 3 bronze medals!
The 960 participants for WorldSkills London 2011 came from 51 countries all over the world and the competition had over 200 000 spectators over the duration of 6 days. TeamFinland was the largest of the participating groups with 46 people taking part.
Finnish competitors took silver in Offset Printing, Aircraft maintenance, Beaty Therapy, Restaurant Service and Caring. Bronze medals came from Painting & Decorating, Floristry and Hairdressing.
On top of this 18 Finns were awarded with the Medallion for Excellence, a recognition given to competitors, who score higher-than-average point score in their respective skills (500 points). Overall this indicates that more than half of TeamFinland finished above the average point score of their skill contest and thus truly represent the best in the world in their respective skill category.
”When you look at average medal points, Team Finland finished 16th, which is very well done in an international and highly rated competition like this”, says Timo Lankinen, the Director General of the Finnish National Board of Education and also the President of Skills Finland, with satisfaction.
”The good result proves that the quality of Finnish vocational training is world-class. Our vocational education and the Finnish school system gained wide recognition also in the events programme of World Skills 2011”, Lankinen says.
