The Ambassador of Finland presented his Credentials to HM the Queen

Pekka Huhtaniemi, Ambassador of Finland to the Court of St. James’s, presented his Letters of Credence to Her Majesty The Queen following ceremonious traditions. The journey towards Buckingham Palace started from outside the Embassy in Belgravia, Central London, where the Royal horse-drawn carriages came with Her Majesty’s Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps to collect the Ambassador and his wife Liisa and their party.  Read more

Hannu Rajaniemi aims at world domination

Hannu Rajaniemi is a scientist, a founder of a think tank that focuses on mathematical problem solving – and now a writer. Rajaniemi’s first novel The Quantum Thief, published in Britain on 30 September, has received excellent reviews. “To me, writing is a form of meditation; it helps me to detach from my demanding job”, Rajaniemi adds up. “Wrestling with scientific problems for a living offers an actual feast of ideas and in the sci-fi context, I’m allowed to go a bit further.” Read more

London Children's Film Festival opens with Moomins

The London Children’s Film Festival, a cinematic extravaganza for the capital’s young film fans and their families, returns to the Barbican and twelve cinemas across London from Saturday 30 October to Sunday 7 November. This year the festival opens with a Moomins-themed Finnish breakfast party, followed by the London Premiere of Moomins and the Comet Chase in 3D! Due to popular demand, a second screening of the Moomin film will take place on 1 November at Barbican Centre. Read more

Honest and HEL-lishly unpretentious food

HELYES!, a pop-up restaurant that combined Finnish design and food culture, was an ultimate success in London during the London Design Festival. HEL YES! got a great amount of media attention and excellent reviews in some of UK’s most important design and food publications. Having been built in a depot in East London where it served as a melting pot for people and ideas, the restaurant was fully booked even before the actual opening date. Read more

Designer Harri Koskinen has had a busy autumn in London. He has been caught up with the London Design Festival’s pop-up restaurant HELYES! and the launch of Skandium’s first furniture collection, Bello, which he designed. For Koskinen the most interesting thing in Finnish design is its “absoluteness, and that we do not ingratiate anyone. And besides, the mentality – the Finns are not Scandinavians but they originate far away from the outskirts of Russian borders.” Read more
