Series of education events by the Embassy began

Finnish education has received a significant amount of attention in the UK, from British politicians and education experts to the general public. Largely due to the top ratings Finland has constantly achieved in OECD's PISA studies, education has been one of the most acknowledged aspects of the image of Finland in the UK. This spring the Embassy and the Finnish Institute in London are organising a series of education events, where the leading British and Finnish experts of education are brought together. Dr Pasi Sahlberg, one of Finland's top experts in education policy, will give a talk at the Scottish Parliament on May 2 and in London on May 17. Read more

New initiative brings Finnish theatrical works to London

From Start to Finnish is new theatrical initiative with the mission to bring Finnish work to the UK and take British work to Finland. The Pleasance Theatre in Islington is excited to welcome two critically acclaimed Finnish works to be performed in London for the first time: The Overcoat and Death of a Theatre Critic. The Overcoat, on stage in April, takes its audience on a whistlestop tour of the last forty years of banking history, from the strikes of the 1970s to the global debt crisis of today. Death of a Theatre Critic, that can be seen in early May, is a dark comedy about chance and destiny following the hardships of a theatre director. Read more

Prime Ministers Katainen and Cameron: Confidence in Europe needs to be restored

"Finland welcomes Britain's desire for a stronger internal market. It will improve competitiveness and employment also in Finland", said Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen in London. Katainen had a bilateral meeting with his UK counterpart David Cameron, in which key issues to the Finnish-British relationship were discussed. While in London, Prime Minister Katainen also met with the Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Mervyn King. Read more

Ducal diplomacy in Cold War Helsinki

London is preparing to host the greatest olympics of all-time this summer but 2012 is also a jubilee year for Helsinki, the current World Design Capital, as it has been exactly 60 years since the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952. Embassy of Finland organised an Olympics-themed event where the 1952 games were reminisced, while looking forward to the coming summer. The event was honoured by the presence of athletes who took part in the 1952 games, along with His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent, who as a 16-year old young man visited the Helsinki Olympics and made an unforgettable impression on the Finnish housewives.
