Music Export Finland invests heavily in the UK market

Music Export Finland’s target market for 2012-2013 is Britain. In the coming two years, the main goal will be to increase the export of music and to promote the visibility of Finnish music in the UK. Britain can be described as incredibly important and exciting market for Finnish music.

Although Britain’s internal market is relatively small, the British influence has global reach from the US to the rest of Europe, even Japan. “If you succeed in Britain, you will be successful everywhere else”, says Riku Salomaa, Project Manager for UK at Music Export Finland.

Music Export Finland’s UK project for 2012-2013 consists of three export programmes: Networks and PR, Live and Export strategies. The programmes are funded by the Finnish Ministry for the Economy and Employment.

“The fact that so many music styles are represented within the export programmes tells about the versatility of the Finnish music export. Local, British partners are very much involved in all of the projects that have been selected for the export programmes”, Salomaa reports.

The support given to individual projects cover up to 65 per cent of the total expenses. “So far 315,000 euros have been allocated for 27 separate projects, which really is a substantial investment of Finnish music export to the UK market”, Salomaa regards.

One of the music exporters chosen to the export strategies program is a well-known Finnish songwriter Jukka Immonen, who focuses strongly on building his international career. “Britain and especially London are definitely key places for a songwriter to be. The support provided by Music Export Finland gives me a great opportunity to work intensively in Britain. Without the support it would not be possible for me to concentrate on the essentials - to write songs” tells Immonen.

An independent steering group appointed by the board of Music Export Finland makes the funding decisions of the three export programmes. The group consists of representatives of record companies, managers as well as representatives of Music Export Finland. Artists and other expert in the field of music industry also participate in the decision-making.

A Nordic affair

In London, a club night showcasing the best up-and-coming Nordic artists called JA JA JA is organised every month at The Lexingtonin Angel. Ja Ja Ja hand-picks the finest emerging talent from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. By working with respected industry curators, JA JA JA makes sure only the best music is filtered through to Londoners’ ears!

Next JA JA JA takes place on Thursday May 31. The lineup includes Finland's Sansa (Texicalli Records/Koolmusik), Maribel (NO) and Reptile Youth (DEN), as well as a DJ set from the Ja Ja Ja DJs.
