Kimmo Pohjonen, Juuso Hannukainen & DakhaBrakha
"Accordion tornado" + "ethnic chaos". Mmmmm…
It's not just budget airlines that are making the world smaller. Musicians also do their best to shorten distances, with collaborations like this summit meeting of kindred Finnish and Ukrainian minds. Kimmo Pohjonen - most recently celebrated for his Songlines Award-nominated album with Kronos Quartet - is one of Finland's most prominent musical pioneers, a man singlehandedly attempting to redefine the accordion, to push it beyond its previously perceived limitations. He's aided in this by compatriot and long-time associate Juuso Hannukainen, a percussionist with a similarly forward-facing ethic who samples Pohjonen's accordion and vocal sounds before reproducing them via a series of drum pads. The effect has been likened to "being inside an accordion tornado". They're joined by Ukrainians DakhaBrakha, a quartet featuring a female vocal trio and a multitude of instruments from all points of the map, through which they channel the melodies of their native Ukraine. They call it "ethnic chaos". And that's exactly the kind of chaos we love.
