On the impacts of the EU referendum (updated July 2016)

The embassy has been closely monitoring the EU referendum and the consequences of the outcome. Finland had hoped that the outcome of the referendum would support the UK’s continued EU membership, but we of course respect the result. The key issue for Finnish people living in the UK is economic uncertainty, the effects of which are very difficult to predict.

The UK is still a full member of the EU, hence there are no immediate changes to the rights, obligations or the freedom of movement of EU-citizens in the UK.

Once the UK has submitted a formal notice of its intention to leave the European Union, negotiations on the terms of its departure and the future relationship between the EU and the UK will commence. At this stage, it is too early to predict what the outcome of those negotiations would be.

The embassy has received enquiries from Finnish and British citizens living in the UK regarding possible dual nationality and acquiring Finnish citizenship. Please find more information on the registering of a Finnish citizen born outside Finland and dual nationality on our website.

The website of the Finnish Immigration Service provides more information on the requirements for acquiring citizenship and on the application process: Citizenship of Finland

The embassy monitors the rights of Finnish citizens in the UK. We respond to enquiries and, when needed, offer consular services to Finnish citizens as usual. Travel advice (in Finnish) can be found here: Iso-Britannia: matkustustiedote.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have. You can find our contact details here, or get in touch via the feedback form on our website.
