Nordic Matters festival: Finnish Highlights

Nordic Matters 2017, a year-long festival at the Southbank Centre,features a big variety of performances, concerts, literature readings, architecture, design and crafts, as well as a number of seminars and talks from the Nordic countries.The festival has had a booming start with a programme built around the core Nordic values such as gender equality, sustainability, children and youth. Explore the Finnish culture for example via these upcoming performances, exhibitions and stories!

28.9.2017 Finnish Runosong with Pekka Kuusisto and Ilona Korhonen

Get a unique perspective on traditional Finnish music with Pekka Kuusisto and Ilona Korhonen. The latter sings archaic runosong, which is the oldest known Fenno-Baltic singing style.

28.9.–1.10.2017 Nordic Music Days

London is hosting the Nordic Music Days 2017, one of the world’s oldest music festivals, founded in 1888. The festival will showcase pioneering contemporary music performances by Nordic composers performed by leading ensembles and soloists from Great Britain and the Nordic region. In addition to the performance programme, an extensive workshop and seminar programme will be offered.

Ongoing until 31.12.2017 Falling Shawls Outi Pieski

Falling Shawls is a year-long installation of traditional Sami shawl-making by Sami artist Outi Pieski in the foyers of the Royal Festival Hall. The installation was inspired by the gathering of the Sami people, who are the indigenous people of Scandinavia. It combines hundreds of fringe elements, made with traditional Sami shawl-making techniques, to create a coloured three-dimensional drawing.
