Finnish Season at Brighton Fringe

Finnish Season takes over Brighton Fringe festival this spring. Come and discover some weird, wonderful and unusual events! We've listed in this article some of the Finnish events in and around Brighton. 

Brighton Fringe is the biggest art festival in England. Finnish Season is organised by the Finnish Institute in London and the Embassy of Finland.

WARMTH: Brighton

Come rain or shine, you can get hot and sweaty on the beach in Brighton’s first everFinnish Pop-up Sauna. WARMTH: Brighton is a traditional, woodfired sauna in a timber-lined, converted horsebox. WARMTH: Brighton will run on weekends and bank holidays, from May 4th to June 3rd. Tickets are on sale on the Brighton Fringe website. For more info contact: warmthbrighton@gmail.com

Wolf Safari by Other Spaces

What is it like to be wild? In 'Wolf Safari' we learn to look at the city through new eyes: those of a wolf! 'Wolf Safari' is a participatory nocturnal wandering performance getting under the wolf's skin, attempting to achieve a shift in the way we perceive and assess our surroundings.
Safari dates: 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th May

Väkevä/Lyydia (double bill) by Agit-Cirk

Circus up close: experience the power of strongman and the beauty of the aerial artist in this world premiere from Finland. Audiences are invited to enter a little tent to get a very special glimpse into the world of these circus disciplines. 2 x 30min shows with an interval in between.
Dates: 4th May at 7pm, 5th to 7th May at 5.30pm
Venue: The Spire, St Mark's Chapel, Eastern Road, Brighton BN2 5JN

Gender Euphoria by James Lorien MacDonald

Helsinki-based comedian and all-around trans man James Lorien MacDonald serves up a mesmerising, heart-warming hour on the quirks of gender: from fake-it-til-you-make-it masculinity to things to do with detachable penis. Expect stories so hilarious they must be true.
Dates: 8th and 9th May at 7.30pm
Venue: Marlborough Theatre, 4 Princes Street, BN2 1RD

Blackpool by Milla Virtanen and Jaakko Toivonen

'Blackpool' takes you on a journey to the tough world of ballroom dancing and reveals the rugged everyday life to be found behind the glamour. The performance smells like self-tanning lotion and rasps like a suede-sole-shoe brush. 
Old wounds are reopened and shared, uncensored.
Dates: 23rd to 25th May at 9.30pm

Hobbyhorses at Family Picnic Day

The latest Finnish craze and phenomenon, hobbyhorses, will make their debut in Brighton during the family picnic day. Come and tackle the obstacle course, suitable for all ages but kids especially love to have a go! 
Dates: 26th May at 1pm – 5pm
Venue: Royal Pavilion Gardens, Brighton BN1 1UG
In case of bad weather, this event will not take place.

Suhde by Company Kate and Pasi

Amazing Finnish acrobatic duo Kate and Pasi literally juggle each other in this show about love and relationships. How can a 50kg woman win over a 100kg man? Expect heart-stopping acrobatics, sensitivity and lots of self-irony in this endearing portrait.
Dates: 28th May at 3pm

Queer Homo by Juuso Kekkonen

Queer Homo is an award-winning stand-up show about a straight guy who dell in love with another man. Juusi Kekkonen's mind-bending tale about polyamory, BDSM and finding happiness has delighted thousands of people since the show's premiere in 2012, and now it's finally UK's turn!
Dates: 28 May at 7pm, 29 May at 8pm

Dark Side of the Mime

'Dark Side of the Mime' explores the grotesque like nothing else, mixing clowning and classic pantomime with unusual bedfellows: porn and splatter movies. The result is a disturbing and hilarious mixture that piques the dark underbelly of humanity. A clown-splatter-porn-mime show!
Dates: 28th and 29th May at 9pm

Sound Barrier by Company Kate and Pasi

'Sound Barrier' is definitely unlike any show you have ever seen before... Finnish circus artist Katerina Repponen turns whip-cracking into an art in this astonishing and arresting piece that proves that the whip can create something beautiful, elegant and soft.
Dates: 29th May at 7pm

The Fabulous Bäckström Brothers

UK premiere of Finnish international musical-comedy hit, combining opera, pin-sharp musical variety and stomach-crampingly funny physical comedy, directed by Spymonkey's Toby Park and Aitor Basauri. Wagner meets Johnny Cash in a Ring of Fire on Route 66.
Dates: 31st May and 1st June at 7pm, 2nd June at 2pm and at 7pm

All City Movement by Jussi TwoSeven

'All City Movement' is a series of street paintings around Brighton. They work as individual pieces or linked together to generate a continuous installation; a tribute to the natural world in support of the efforts to protect the environment, also within the urban sphere.
Various locations around the city, BN1 and BN2.
