Canary Wharf Light Festival feat Alexander Reichstein

“Last Parade” is a site-specific video installation by artist Alexander Reichstein curated by Vassiliki Tzanakou (ARTinTRA) for Canary Wharf Winter Lights, 16-27 January 2019. Inspired by the Platonic philosophy and in particular the ‘Allegory of the Cave’, Reichstein creates a 25 meter video projection where the shadows of endangered animals are marching at the Canary Wharf waterside.

For the “Last Parade” Reichstein is using the relationship between ordinary objects and their shadows (or their reflections) that Plato used in his philosophy to illustrate the relationship between the Physical World and the world of Ideas, and our understanding of the world we exist in. His aim is to question human activity and the impact it has on the natural environment, as well as to explore whether a shift of our ideas - and hence of our actions - can revert the environmental destruction we have created.

The animals, walking in pairs, just as they did when marching towards Noah’s Arc, are marching towards a dark void. Is this going to be their “Last Parade”?
